Human Rights Defender – Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄)

郭飞雄13日刑满出狱回到广州家中 (Rights Activist Guo Feixiong Released Tuesday)
Radio Free Asia, September 13, 2011
http://www.rfa.org/mandarin/yataibaodao/gfq-09132011080502.html

Activist and writer Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄) was released from prison on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, following the completion of a five-year sentence for “illegal business activity.” Prior to his imprisonment, Guo had also worked as a legal advisor at the Beijing-based Shengzhi Law Office and provided legal assistance on several controversial cases. Amongst these included helping the villagers of Taishi, Guangdong, to remove a corrupt village chief in 2005. The charge of “illegal business activity” was connected with the 2001 publication of a book that Guo had edited on a political scandal in Liaoning.

Human Rights Defender – Wang Lihong (王荔蕻)

China Jails Activist for Nine Months
Al Jazeera, September 09, 2011
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/asia-pacific/2011/09/2011995915949125.html

Beijing-based activist Wang Lihong (王荔蕻) was convicted today by the Chaoyang District People’s Court of Beijing of “picking quarrels and provoking troubles” (寻衅滋事). She was sentenced to nine months in jail, with an expected release date of December 20, 2011. The charge against Wang was based on her role in organizing a protest outside a Fujian courthouse on April 16, 2010, where three netizens were tried for “making false accusations” after they assisted a petitioner in documenting the rape and death of the petitioner’s daughter. Wang’s family and her lawyer state that she will appeal the sentence.
